Here's some of our top travel tips to help you get the most out of your holiday travel.

As many of us prepare for holidays and extended travel over the Christmas and New Year period, the team at AutoPlus want to help you enjoy safe and relaxed travel.

Here are our top tips for holiday travel:

  1. Make sure your car is serviced and had a recent safety check
  2. Check all your fluid levels
  3. Carry extra water for emergencies
  4. Check your tyre pressure and the condition of your tyres – don’t forget to check the spare
  5. Allow plenty of time. Don’t add the extra stress of worrying about being late
  6. Plan your trip in advance - but allow for some flexibility and things not going to plan
  7. Anticipate trouble spots - where and when are you likely to encounter significant traffic - plan to avoid rush hour
  8. Get plenty of rest before a long trip
  9. Take a break or change drivers on long trips - approximately every 2 hours (more often if you start to feel tired or distracted). Don't drive for longer than 8-10 hours in total a day
  10. If you're traveling in country areas, remember that some areas have poor radio reception, so download entertainment options on your phone - music, podcasts, etc
  11. If there's a chance you'll have a weak phone signal and you're relying on it for navigation, consider downloading directions for offline use (eg: Google Maps)
  12. Don't forget your phone charger
  13. Clean your windscreen and check your wiper fluid - consider sunglasses with a polarized lens
  14. Drink plenty of water - dehydration can contribute to fatigue
  15. If you are towing, check the condition of tyres and lights as well as the towbar and connections
  16. Be aware of the effects of any medication you might be taking - some cause drowsiness (eg: some hayfever medication etc)
