Car Maintenance In A Pandemic

car-maintenance-pandemic-tips

In these challenging times, many of us are using our cars less, and for some, not at all. We know many people are concerned about maintaining their car for future driving and to reduce the potential of expensive damage.

Why is it important?

Over long periods batteries can go flat without use to recharge them. Tyres can deflate from inactivity and over long periods can develop flat spots. Inactivity can also lead to brakes rusting and sticking. Extended periods without the heat of the running engine can cause the exhaust to rust. Rust can also accumulate on the inside of the fuel tank. Hoses can dry out and crack.

How to protect your car!

Keep your car undercover / indoors if possible. Clean the exterior (and keep it clean) so that water stains, sap from trees and bird droppings don’t damage the paint over time. Start your car regularly, at least every 2 weeks as a minimum.

If you can use your car for essential travel (going to the supermarket, doctors, pharmacist, checking on vulnerable family) it is a good idea to do so, even if it is a short trip.

If you are not driving at all, you can still start your car.

  • It is a good idea to let the car run for several minutes – however, you need to let it run above idle. That doesn’t mean revving the engine, but a gentle pressure on the accelerator to run above idle is ideal. Remember to check that the car is in neutral and the hand brake is on.
  • Let the engine run for several minutes to get some heat built up (for the exhaust) and to give the battery some time to charge.
  • If you can safely do so, you could move a short distance backwards and forwards in your driveway.

Disengage and re-engage the handbrake to ensure that the brake pads don’t get stuck to the discs or drums.

Engage the brake pedal as well.

Keep the fuel tank full with quality petrol. This helps keep moisture entering the tank, can help prevent rust and keep the seals from drying out.

Don’t forget to clean out the interior. It’s easy to leave food, wrappers, drink bottles and other trash in the car. Clean out any food, bottes and wrappers to avoid a melted mess or mould, and vacuum to remove crumbs to deter ants and mice.

Check that the tyre valve caps are properly tightened.

Don’t forget that servicing is still important, even when KMs are reduced. Used oil contains corrosive elements, including sludge and metal filings. At least having the oil changed is a good idea if the vehicle will be stored for extended periods.
