As the weather begins to warm up we start to see many cars overheating. Don't wait until it is too late! Check your coolant levels regularly.
When was the last time you check your car’s coolant levels? Now is a great time to check your fluid levels, especially as many of us drive longer distances in the lead up to the holiday season as well as during the Christmas and New Year period.
Keep an eye on your temperature gauge and warning lights when driving too. It can indicate that your coolant is low. It could also be a warning that something else is causing your vehicle to overheat. Don't ignore it. Check your coolant levels and top up if necessary. Have your vehicle checked if coolant is not low or if the temperature gauge stays high or warning light stays on.
If your coolant level is low, keep in mind that modern vehicles require proper coolant. Water can cool your engine, however it does not work as well as coolant. Coolant has properties which help protect your engine and works more effectively than water in both hot and cold conditions. Some vehicles require a specific type of coolant so you should check your Owner's Manual for the recommended coolant.
When topping up your coolant levels, keep the coolant between the minimum and maximum levels - do not over fill (more is not better).
Most importantly, if your car does overheat do not open the radiator cap straight away. The hot fluid could boil out of the radiator, causing serious burns. Wait until the engine and radiator has cooled down, the open the cap slowly and carefully.
